Application of Infrared Thermography in Sports Science
I remember my first experience using thermography. It was while working at the IBV (Institute of Biomechanics of Valencia). I was immersed in a R&D project about heating systems in sports clothing. One of my colleagues asked me to perform some thermal images for the report. The thermographic camera was quite big, like a video camera television. It was inside of a box and no one had used it, probably because no much researchers knew of its existence. I made the images, but I did not follow any protocol or really understand its camera operation. In my opinion, that first experience exemplifies the first experience that many people are having today in laboratories and research centres.

“Male Infertility: Understanding, Causes and Treatment”

“Male Infertility: Understanding, Causes and Treatment”
Male infertility presents a spectrum of phenotypes often with a complex etiology. About 15% of couples worldwide suffer from infertility, and male factors contribute to roughly one third, female factors contribute to another one third, and the remaining are due to combined male and female factors. In-depth physical and physiological examinations reveal exact etiology in only a few cases, resulting in the classification of the remaining as idiopathic. Due to complex and partially understood etiology, the treatment of male infertility is not straightforward. In the cases with a defined etiology, specific treatments offer hope, but in the cases with idiopathic infertility, empirical and generalized treatments are advised often.

“Cosmetics and Dermatological Problems and Solutions”
It is a great pleasure to write the foreward to the third edition of Dr. Zoe Draelos’s textbook, Cosmetics and Dermatological Problems and Solutions. Zoe has a long interest in this area and has made major contributions to the field through the application of scientific principles to the evaluation of the efficacy of cosmetic products. Her training as an engineer, clinical researcher and clinical dermatologist are a unique combination
in this field and the result is a new level of understanding of the wide variety of agents that are used as cosmetics. This book is a testament to Dr. Draelos’s commitment to
educating dermatologists about the wide variety of products available to our patients and on the scientific basis for cosmetics.

Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery

Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery
We are very pleased to present the third edition of Clinical Reproductive Medicine and Surgery. With each successive edition, we have asked our authors to help us maintain a textbook that is comprehensive and easy to read and covers most aspects of clinical practice in reproductive medicine. Our target audience remains fellows, residents, and those who have recently begun independent practice for the irst time. We have strived to keep the textbook manageable in terms of both cost and length. For our third edition, we have made a few notable changes in an attempt to further improve upon the original textbook. In addition to asking the authors to update their chapters, we have asked them to start each chapter with a brief case presentation and a set of key words and phrases.

“Sexually Transmitted Infections in HIV-Infected Adults and Special Populations”
The synergistic relationship between sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has been appreciated since early in the HIV epidemic. Transmitted through many of the same behaviors, the co-infection rate of STIs and HIV are significant, particularly in this age when STIs are on the rise again. As of the time of this writing, the most recent CDC STD surveillance (2015) report detailed an all-time high of cases of the three reportable STIs—chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis.

“PSYCHIATRIC-MENTAL HEALTH NURSING A n I n t e r p e r s o n a l A p p r o a c h”
There are several other features of this text that commend it to the student and the nurse seeking a review or a refresher course. First, the authors have done an excellent job in noting historical context. Understanding where and how these ideas and practices have had their origin allows the reader to appreciate the growth and development of information. This information, when tested in practice/experience, leads to knowledge. Hopefully, it also encourages the idea that there is more to know as well as to appreciate in the developmental nature of information. Second, the authors have made extensive use of the
current research literature and have well used the nursing research literature.

“Managing the Diabetic Foot second edition”
We have written the second edition to support and encourage all those people who valiantly care for patients with the diabetic foot -one of the most fascinating but challenging of all diabetic complications. Diabetic feet quickly reach the point of no return and it is extremely important to diagnose problems early and carry out rapid interventions. This is the only way to manage diabetic feet and to save them from amputation and it is a key theme of our second edition. changes in the way we look after diabetic feet and we highlight
these advances in our second edition.

“The Wiley Handbook of Obsessive Compulsive Disorders”
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) was once considered a very rare and untreatable condition (Kringlen, 1965). However, in the past fifty years changes in how the condition is defined and understood has led to the identification of a broad swath of symptoms and associated features that suggest the disorder is fairly common, afflicting up to approximately 1.2%–3% of the population (i.e., Ruscio, Stein, Chiu, & Kessler, 2010; Yuki, Meinlschmidt, Gloster, & Lieb, 2012). Further, research has shown that those with OCD have high rates of disability and occupational and social role dysfunction (Markarian et al., 2010).

“Biology of Vascular Smooth Muscle Vasoconstriction and Dilatation”

“Biology of Vascular Smooth Muscle: Vasoconstriction and Dilatation”
The discovery that the vascular contractility is regulated by a potent diffusible factor derived from the endothelium made by Furchgott and Zawadzki in 1980 is an epoch-making milestone in vascular biology. For a long time, the endothelium has been largely considered as a selective permeable barrier between the circulating blood and the vascular smooth muscle. Intensive studies evoked by Furchgott and Zawadzki’s work since then have firmly established that the endothelium-derived nitric oxide, prostanoids, endothelin, and endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization play a dominant role in the regulation of vascular activities both under physiolog- ical and pathophysiological conditions.

Total Hip Replacement Case Series from a Leading Registry

Total Hip Replacement Case Series from a Leading Registry
The Orthopaedic Department of University of Athens was one of the first centres in Greece where total hip replacement (THR) was introduced into clinical practice. The majority of complicated cases and neglected or maltreated cases of congenital hip disease (CHD) in infancy were referred to that centre for treatment. Our THR Registry was established in the early 1970s. It includes approximately 1000 THRs, performed by one surgeon (GH) from 1973 to 1994 and followed continuously. The core idea of this book is to provide, through igures (“a picture is worth more than a thousand words”), orthopaedic surgeons, interested in hip reconstruction surgery, with data from a leading registry, including unique, homogenous information from long-term followed patients.

“Clinical Image-Based Procedures”
On October 17, 2016, The International Workshop on Clinical Image-Based Procedures: From Planning to Intervention (CLIP 2016) was held in Athens, Greece, in conjunction with the 19th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). Following the tradition set in the last four years, this year’s edition of the workshop was as productive and exciting a forum for the discussion and dissemination of clinically tested, state-of-the-art methods for image-based planning, monitoring, and evaluation of medical procedures as in yesteryears. Over the past few years, there has been considerable and growing interest in the development and evaluation of new translational image-based techniques in the modern hospital. For a decade or more, a proliferation of meetings dedicated to medical image computing has created the need for greater study and scrutiny of the clinical application and validation of such methods.

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Male Infertility

Libros de Medicina en PDF
“The Diagnosis and Treatment of Male Infertility”
Male infertility is a common problem and is encountered in isolation or in conjunction
with female reproductive problems in more than 50% of infertile couples. In spite of this large prevalence, the provision for specialist health care to address a male’s reproductive problems remains inadequate compared to his female partner. This anomaly has led to a situation where semen analysis has become the only arbitrator to offer expensive assisted reproductive procedures. Doctors are quick to advise in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedures whenever the results of semen analysis are suboptimal without offering additional tests to identify potential reversible causes for the suboptimal result.

Liver Diseases An essential guide for nurses and health care professionals
The British Liver Nurses Forum (BLNF) began in 1998 with a small group of nurses all with a common interest in caring for patients with liver disease. From this has grown a successful organisation which continues to be steered by nurses passionate about liver nursing. In 2008 the BLNF celebrated 10 years of being an active force in liver nursing, and continuing to strive to improve the quality of care for liver patients, highlight issues related to liver disease and empower liver nurses. The prominence of liver disease has changed beyond recognition with some disease processes being highlighted both by the media and government. The government’s national scoping exercise for liver disease has given the BLNF an opportunity to voice the concerns of nurses within this speciality and raise the profi le of liver nursing in the public arena.

Biofluid Mechanics Second Edition
The second and enlarged edition of BIOFLUID MECHANICS is due to the enthusiastic response to the first edition by the editorial board members of the World Scientific, Singapore. This present edition incorporates many of the suggestions received from my colleagues and students advising me to include materials related to Tissue Biomechanics, a new emerging field. However, the general plan, as described in the preface to the first edition published in 1992, remains unchanged, except for the addition of two new, on Tissue Engineering and Cellular Engineering and some new materials on computational biofluid mechanics that have been included.

Molecular Virology

Molecular Virology
Today, knowledge about viruses or distinct aspects of viral infections has become important for our daily life. Continuously, we are confronted with headlines and news concerning, e.g., new influenza viruses, outbreaks of norovirus epidemics, or transmission of otherwise rare zoonotic infections to humans. Due to the major progress in molecular biology and biotechnology, the knowledge on viral infections multiplied during the past decades. Thereby it is possible to characterize and identify new virus types rapidly after their first emergence. Rational development of both antiviral drugs and protective vaccines has reduced the potential danger emanating from viruses for human and animal health.

“Modern Concepts of Peripheral Nerve Repair”

“Modern Concepts of Peripheral Nerve Repair”
We, the editors of this book, join active membership of the German interdisciplinary study group named “NervClub” and we recognized that a concise book (comprisal) on modern concepts of peripheral nerve repair is currently not available for international readers. Therefore, we edited this book with a focus on very common and frequently occurring traumatic peripheral nerve injuries, their diagnostic with decision-making, and their reconstruction and long-term post-surgery patient care. This book should provide a compendium for graduated medical doctors interested in neurosurgery, hand surgery, or traumatology and final-year medical students with an upcoming interest in peripheral nerve surgery.

Obesity and Lipotoxicity

Obesity and Lipotoxicity
Obesity and its associated diseases are a major and growing worldwide public health problem of our century. Recent studies have suggested that obesity prevalence is seriously increasing mostly due to depression- and anxietyrelated eating disorders, which may deeply affect quality of life. Although behavioral improvements are aimed at promoting lifestyle
changes, multidisciplinary interventions should be based on biochemical and immunological pathways. Either only conservative methods or only surgical approaches have limited efficacy, in part due to the involvement of counterregulatory multiple metabolic pathways in obesity.
