Ross and Wilson has been a core text for students of anatomy and physiology for over 50 years. This latest edition continues to be aimed at healthcare professionals including nurses, students of nursing, the allied health professions and complementary therapies, paramedics and ambulance technicians, many of whom have found previous editions invaluable. It retains the straightforward approach to the description of body systems and how they work. The anatomy and physiology of health is supplemented by new sections describing common age-related changes to structure and function, before considering the pathology and pathophysiology of some important disorders and diseases.
There are two kinds of textbooks: those that aim to cover a i eld of knowledge and those that aim to dei ne and conceptualize it. This book is of the second kind. Most textbooks in clinical disciplines are structured in accordance with the conventional system for classifying diseases. A family medicine text that adopts this structure faces two difi culties. Family physicians encounter clinical problems before they have been classii ed into disease categories. In principle, family physicians are available for any type of problem. There is thus no disease, however rare, that may not be encountered in family practice.
The primary functions of the lung are oxygenation of mixed venous blood and removal of carbon dioxide. Gas exchange depends on the integrity of the entire cardiopulmonary system, including airways, pulmonary blood vessels, alveoli, respiratory muscles, and respiratory control mechanisms. A few pulmonary function tests assess individual parts of the cardiopulmonary system. However, most lung function tests measure the status of the lungs’ components in an overlapping way.
This tenth edition describes the most common pulmonary function tests, their techniques, and the pathophysiology that may be evaluated by each test. Topics covered include the following:
his book contains the basic neuroanatomical facts necessary for the practice of medicine. It is suitable for medical students, dental students, nurses, and allied health students. Residents fnd this book useful during their rotations.
The functional organization of the nervous system has been emphasized and indicates how injury and disease can result in neurologic deficits. The amount of factual information has been strictly limited to that which is clinically important.
The advances in neuroscience since publication of the third edition have been nothing short of breathtaking. The elucidation of the human genome has lived up to its promise to “change everything” we know about our brains. We now have insight into how neurons differ at the molecular level, and this knowledge has been exploited to develop revolutionary technologies to trace their connections and interrogate their functions.
The genetic basis for many neurological and psychiatric diseases has been revealed. The methods of genetic engineering have made it possible to create animal models to examine how genes and genetically defi ned circuits contribute to brain function.

We wrote the first edition of Step-Up to Medicine during our third year of medical school because we could not find a review book that was concise, yet covered the breadth of pathology encountered during the internal medicine clerkship and the corresponding NBME shelf examinations. Our goal was to create a single “study tool” to spare medical students the hassle and expense of trying to extract pertinent information from multiple sources.
Now in its fourth edition, Step-Up to Medicine has been completely revised based on extensive feedback by both faculty and students.
