“Clinical Image-Based Procedures”
On October 17, 2016, The International Workshop on Clinical Image-Based Procedures: From Planning to Intervention (CLIP 2016) was held in Athens, Greece, in conjunction with the 19th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer-Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). Following the tradition set in the last four years, this year’s edition of the workshop was as productive and exciting a forum for the discussion and dissemination of clinically tested, state-of-the-art methods for image-based planning, monitoring, and evaluation of medical procedures as in yesteryears. Over the past few years, there has been considerable and growing interest in the development and evaluation of new translational image-based techniques in the modern hospital. For a decade or more, a proliferation of meetings dedicated to medical image computing has created the need for greater study and scrutiny of the clinical application and validation of such methods.

The Diagnosis and Treatment of Male Infertility

“The Diagnosis and Treatment of Male Infertility”
Male infertility is a common problem and is encountered in isolation or in conjunction
with female reproductive problems in more than 50% of infertile couples. In spite of this large prevalence, the provision for specialist health care to address a male’s reproductive problems remains inadequate compared to his female partner. This anomaly has led to a situation where semen analysis has become the only arbitrator to offer expensive assisted reproductive procedures. Doctors are quick to advise in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection procedures whenever the results of semen analysis are suboptimal without offering additional tests to identify potential reversible causes for the suboptimal result.

Liver Diseases An essential guide for nurses and health care professionals

Liver Diseases An essential guide for nurses and health care professionals
The British Liver Nurses Forum (BLNF) began in 1998 with a small group of nurses all with a common interest in caring for patients with liver disease. From this has grown a successful organisation which continues to be steered by nurses passionate about liver nursing. In 2008 the BLNF celebrated 10 years of being an active force in liver nursing, and continuing to strive to improve the quality of care for liver patients, highlight issues related to liver disease and empower liver nurses. The prominence of liver disease has changed beyond recognition with some disease processes being highlighted both by the media and government. The government’s national scoping exercise for liver disease has given the BLNF an opportunity to voice the concerns of nurses within this speciality and raise the profi le of liver nursing in the public arena.

Biofluid Mechanics Second Edition
The second and enlarged edition of BIOFLUID MECHANICS is due to the enthusiastic response to the first edition by the editorial board members of the World Scientific, Singapore. This present edition incorporates many of the suggestions received from my colleagues and students advising me to include materials related to Tissue Biomechanics, a new emerging field. However, the general plan, as described in the preface to the first edition published in 1992, remains unchanged, except for the addition of two new, on Tissue Engineering and Cellular Engineering and some new materials on computational biofluid mechanics that have been included.

Molecular Virology

Molecular Virology
Today, knowledge about viruses or distinct aspects of viral infections has become important for our daily life. Continuously, we are confronted with headlines and news concerning, e.g., new influenza viruses, outbreaks of norovirus epidemics, or transmission of otherwise rare zoonotic infections to humans. Due to the major progress in molecular biology and biotechnology, the knowledge on viral infections multiplied during the past decades. Thereby it is possible to characterize and identify new virus types rapidly after their first emergence. Rational development of both antiviral drugs and protective vaccines has reduced the potential danger emanating from viruses for human and animal health.

“Modern Concepts of Peripheral Nerve Repair”

“Modern Concepts of Peripheral Nerve Repair”
We, the editors of this book, join active membership of the German interdisciplinary study group named “NervClub” and we recognized that a concise book (comprisal) on modern concepts of peripheral nerve repair is currently not available for international readers. Therefore, we edited this book with a focus on very common and frequently occurring traumatic peripheral nerve injuries, their diagnostic with decision-making, and their reconstruction and long-term post-surgery patient care. This book should provide a compendium for graduated medical doctors interested in neurosurgery, hand surgery, or traumatology and final-year medical students with an upcoming interest in peripheral nerve surgery.

Obesity and Lipotoxicity

Obesity and Lipotoxicity
Obesity and its associated diseases are a major and growing worldwide public health problem of our century. Recent studies have suggested that obesity prevalence is seriously increasing mostly due to depression- and anxietyrelated eating disorders, which may deeply affect quality of life. Although behavioral improvements are aimed at promoting lifestyle
changes, multidisciplinary interventions should be based on biochemical and immunological pathways. Either only conservative methods or only surgical approaches have limited efficacy, in part due to the involvement of counterregulatory multiple metabolic pathways in obesity.

Front Line Surgery

Front Line Surgery
As you step off the plane you are struck by an oppressive heat, but this is not what catches your attention. It is the foreignness of this place – the unfamiliar terrain, the
noise, the oddly clustered tents and buildings, the serious and determined looks of people involved in a war. I had completed a trauma fellowship at one of the busiest penetrating trauma centers in the U.S. and thought I was ready for anything; mistake number one. Fortunately you have at least several days of overlap with the outgoing group of surgeons that you are replacing. I first met the surgeon I was replacing in a dusty tent in Tikrit, Iraq. Luckily for me it was Marty Schreiber, one of the best trauma surgeons I know.

“Philosophical Issues in Psychiatry IV”

“Philosophical Issues in Psychiatry IV”
All the chapters of this book began as talks given at a conference held in Copenhagen, Denmark, on September 9– 11, 2015. The conference was organized and chaired by the editors of this volume, Kenneth S. Kendler (KSK) and Josef Parnas (JP). The conference itself was a stimulating three- day experience. Each talk was followed by a formal commentary and then an open give- and- take with the audience and other speakers, who were rarely shy about raising hard questions. So each speaker coming to the meeting agreed to present a paper of their own, comment formally on another, and write them both up for publication. As with the earlier volumes in this series (Kendler and Parnas 2008, 2012, 2015), we have sought to capture the interactive nature of the meeting through the organization of this volume. In addition to a general introduction, written by KSK, each individual paper has an introduction (written by KSK or JP) and a discussion.

“Percutaneous Penetration Enhancers Physical Methods in Penetration Enhancement”
The main function of skin is the protection of the body from the external environment by preventing loss of water and the ingress of exogenous substances. This implies that the skin acts as a barrier for the diffusion of substances into the underlying tissue. Despite this role, the skin has become recognized as an important drug delivery route which can be reached directly. It is an ideal site for the application of drugs for achieving local (topical) and systemic (transdermal) drug effects. Local or topical drug delivery assumes
treating various skin diseases, while transdermal delivery aims to achieve systemically active drug levels in order to treat systemic diseases.

Rheumatology a color handbook

Rheumatology a color handbook
Arthritis and its allied conditions are among the most common causes of treatable disability worldwide. In developed countries, it is estimated that approx – imately one in three adults suffer from arthritis. The burden posed by rheumatic illness is formidable, not only in financial terms but perhaps more importantly in terms of the detrimental impact that these conditions exert on vitality and quality of life. Rheumatology is the subspecialty of internal medicine and pediatrics perhaps most often charged with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the musculoskeletal system. Although
musculoskeletal manifestations are common to many rheumatic conditions, these diseases are frequently characterized by multisystem involvement.

Echocardiography Board Review

Echocardiography Board Review
The Echocardiography Board Review is written for the primary purpose of helping candidates
prepare for the National Board of Echocardiography and should be helpful to both
cardiologists and anesthesiologists preparing for this certification process. At the time of its writing, there were no other published works available that comprehensively dealt
with the material covered in these examinations in a question, answer, and discussion format. This second edition is thoroughly revised and 100 questions have been added. The authors have used this format in teaching echocardiography to cardiology fellows in training. One of the main impetuses for initiating this work was the request by many of the trainees and prospective echocardiography examination candidates to write such material. Similar requests have also come from echocardiography technicians preparing for their certification examination. There are 500 well-thought-out questions in this review book.

CHEMORADIATION IN CANCER THERAPY

CHEMORADIATION IN CANCER THERAPY
As the treatment of cancer continues to evolve, clinicians are constantly seeking new and innovative strategies to expand the use of currently available treatment modalities. Among the different strategies to improve therapy, the combining of chemotherapeutic drugs with radiation has perhaps had the strongest impact on current solid tumor treatment practice. This combination has been in use for many decades, but now has become a common treatment option in many clinical settings. This is particularly true for concurrent chemoradiotherapy, which in many recent clinical trials has been shown to be superior to radiotherapy alone in controlling local–regional disease and in improving patient survival. Combining chemotherapeutic drugs with radiotherapy has a strong biologic rationale. Such agents reduce the number of cells in tumors undergoing radiotherapy by their independent cytotoxic action and by rendering tumor cells more susceptible to killing by ionizing radiation.

Rethinking the Clinical Gaze

Rethinking the Clinical Gaze
Medicine, health care and the wider social meaning and management of health are undergoing major changes. In part, this reflects developments in science and technology, which enable new forms of diagnosis, treatment and the delivery of health care. It also reflects changes in the locus of care and burden of responsibility for health. Today, genetics, informatics, imaging and integrative technologies, such as nanotechnology, are redefining our understanding of the body, health and disease; at the same time, health is no longer simply the domain of conventional medicine, nor the clinic. The ‘birth of the clinic’ heralded the process through which health and illness became increasingly subject to the surveillance of medicine.

FORENSIC ALCOHOL TEST EVIDENCE (FATE)

FORENSIC ALCOHOL TEST EVIDENCE (FATE)
The motivation to write Forensic Alcohol Test Evidence (FATE) is an extension of my long-standing interest in learning and explaining how things work. As an undergraduate, my focus on the neurophysiology of the brain and behavior was a passion that grew, as did the opportunity to work with excellent mentors at Queens College of the City University of New York and at Rockefeller University, where I continued working after completing my undergraduate degree and before starting my graduate work in psychobiology at Binghamton University. My research at the Rutgers University Center of Alcohol Studies and the Rutgers Alcohol Behavior Research Lab allowed me to
follow my scientific curiosity about the relationship between the brain, behavioral
psychology, and alcohol. Coincidentally, this academic background in both laboratory research and clinical testing related to alcohol met the need of the legal community to have a resource to answer both analytical and biobehavioral questions about the role, if any, of alcohol in a crime or accident.

Cerebral Microbleeds Pathophysiology to Clinical Practice

Cerebral Microbleeds Pathophysiology to Clinical Practice
Cerebrovascular diseases (including symptomatic strokes and vascular cognitive impairment) are arguably the leading cause of death and disability worldwide. About one in three symptomatic strokes are caused by diseases of small perforating arteries,
including most cases of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage, the most severe and lethal type of stroke. Despite the clear importance of small vessel diseases, many effective interventions (for example endovascular techniques) currently target only disease of large arteries, because small vessels are technically inaccessible and the underlying mechanisms of small vessel diseases remain relatively poorly understood.

Metabolic Syndrome Pathophysiology The Role of Essential Fatty Acids

Metabolic Syndrome Pathophysiology The Role of Essential Fatty Acids
The incidence of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and
coronary heart disease, which form the core components of the metabolic syndrome,
is increasing at an alarming rate in almost all countries. The incidence of the metabolic syndrome is especially high in the Indian subcontinent. This increase in the incidenceof the metabolic syndrome has been attributed to lack of exercise, increase in the consumption of energy-dense food, and environmental changes. What is more disturbing is an enormous increase in the incidence of obesity in children, as a result of which these children are likely to develop other features of the metabolic syndrome as they grow to adulthood.

The Ischemic Penumbra

Libros de Medicina en PDF
The Ischemic Penumbra
In the world of acute ischemic stroke, nothing is more important than an understanding of the ischemic penumbra. The whole concept of the existence of salvageable tissue, that is, the penumbra, is based on the daily clinical observation of almost immediate and early recovery from an episode of hemiparesis or other clinical expression of occlusion of a blood vessel within any of the arterial territories of the brain. Indeed, even before there was an appreciation of the complexities of the ischemic cascade, many clinicians dealing with stroke understood that something akin to the ischemic penumbra was likely to exist. These ideas, which fueled pivotal experimental studies to document the penumbra, clashed with the then prevailing dogma that the ischemic brain was doomed to die within minutes of onset of the clinical event. It is because of this central positioning of the penumbra in stroke outcome and therapy that we felt that a volume dedicated to its existence was timely.
