Addiction at Work Tackling Drug Use and Misuse in the Workplace
Drug abuse and a whole range of associated problems have increased dramatically over the last 30 years and, as a significant number of drug abusers are in employment, the workplace has not escaped the consequences of these increases. However, until now, it has not been possible to access an authoritative source of information on these issues because a comprehensive text has not been available. This book attempts to fill that gap, bringing together the best contemporary thinking on all aspects of the field.
It has three parts, the first of which puts the subject of misuse into context, explaining for example that this problem includes the use of socially acceptable drugs, such as alcohol, as well as illicit substances, and identifying the risks and side effects of legitimately prescribed psychoactive substances.

Bedside Approach to Autonomic Disorders
Disorders of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are often a severe burden to the
quality of life of our patients, orthostatic intolerance, sweating disorders, sexual dysfunction). In some cases, they may be harmful (syncope with falls, heat
intolerance, urinary retention) or even life threatening (sudden cardiac death, sympathetic storm, heat shock). Diagnosis of ANS disorders is stillu underrepresented, despite their common occurrence in clinical practice. This may be attributed at least in part to a lack of awareness and attention to symptoms of ANS dysfunction. Information on the ANS is rare in many neurological textbooks and often missing during education. This booklet shall help to recognize the presence and distribution of autonomic dysfunctions and provide tips for further management.

Survival Analysis

Survival Analysis
Survival analysis concerns sequential occurrences of events governed by probabilistic laws.Recent decades have witnessed many applications of survival analysis in various disciplines. The primary objective of this book is to provide an introduction to the many specialized facets on survival analysis. Scope – wise, this book is expected to appeal to a wide variety of disciplinary areas. Given my multidisciplinary background in training and research, this book of survival analysis covers techniques and specifi cations applied in medicine, biostatistics, demography, mathematical biology, sociology, and epidemiology, with practical examples associated with each of those disciplines. The celebrated Cox model, used in almost all applied areas, is paid special attention to in this book, with three chapters devoted to this innovative perspective.

Hematological Disorders in Children

Hematological Disorders in Children
In recent years, the pathogenesis of hematological disorders in children has been
clariied, which has led to remarkable progress in the treatment outcome for these
disorders. In particular, molecular targeted therapy has been shown to have an effect
on childhood leukemia refractory to conventional therapy. Further development of these strategies will enable us to use more effective and less toxic therapies for hematological disorders in the future. Here we describe the pathogenesis and treatment
(present and future) of several representative hematological disorders in children,
especially focusing on the genetic and molecular aspects.

IEP Goal Writing for Speech-Language Pathologists

IEP Goal Writing for Speech-Language Pathologists
As speech-language pathologists (SLPs), we have a responsibility to support the state standards. In order for students to be successful with the standards, they must have mastered specific speech-language skills. There are three objectives of this book. First, to familiarize the SLP with specific Early Learning Standards and Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the speech-language skills needed to be successful with these standards. The second objective is to outline prerequisite speech-language skills and steps to mastering those skills. The third objective, through a step-by-step process, is to write defensible IEP goals that are related to the standards.
The information and process provided in this book are based on research, fifty years of combined experience as school-based SLPs and administrators, and reviewing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) from all over the country.

Clays and Health Properties and Therapeutic Uses

Clays and Health Properties and Therapeutic Uses
On reading this book a reader will certainly be astonished by the great age and importance of the observations on the biological role of clays. This empirically
established knowledge, as that reported to us thanks to an expert author of Arabic
medicine of the Middle Ages, resulted in the development of a simple and inexpensive
pharmacopeia. Facing the poverty of a great part of the world’s population and the crucial problem of hunger it is thus not surprising to see children eating clay. This “nutritional geophagia” certainy remained in many memories following the images broadcast in the media in the whole world showing Haitian populations making clay cookies. The astonishing multiplicity of clays will enable the readers of this book to make an enthralling comparative study of all their properties. However, the biological role of clays has only barely been studied by the scientiic community.

Tinnitus A multidisciplinary approach

Tinnitus A multidisciplinary approach
Clinicians and researchers who accept the challenge of helping patients suffering from
tinnitus must be prepared to implement management strategies that are as varied and
diverse as the population they serve. The notorious abundance of tinnitus ‘cures’ suggests that there are (at least) as many tinnitus causes, triggers and mechanisms. It will probably always be the case that no one-size-fits-all approach to tinnitus management will succeed, but it is equally likely that a variety of interventions may, in many cases, produce some amelioration of the patient’s distress. Most researchers and practising clinicians report that a combination of sound therapy and counselling facilitates the patient’s ability to manage the tinnitus experience.

Computational Analysis Of The Human

Computational Analysis Of The Human
The human visual system, from photoreceptors to higher-order processing of signals in the brain, is a remarkable example of the power of evolutionary processes acting over vast periods to develop a finely tuned system capable of complex recognition, recall, and execution of highly accurate tasks in space and time. In terms of genetics, physiology, and structure, the evolutionary pathway to higher vertebrate vision can be traced.1 In fact, it has been hypothesized that the development of a complex visual system preceded and provided the evolutionary substrate for the evolution of brain expansion that made possible higher cognitive functions in primates. Vertebrate vision is one of the most profound and illuminating examples illustrating the operation of evolutionary principles.

Acute Side Effects of Radiation Therapy

Acute Side Effects of Radiation Therapy
Dichotomies in medicine are common, but it is nowhere more clearly demonstrated than in radiation exposure either used in diagnoses or in treatment as compared to excessive or unwanted radiation exposure either locally or systematically. Other
dichotomies demonstrated in radiation injury include the separation between acute
and late radiation damage, locally applied as contrasted to systemic or total body
exposure, one or few radiation exposures vs. fractionated radiation exposures, and
use of preventive or ameliorating agents applied before exposure in contrast to postexposure treatments. All of these are important to our understanding of the effective, appropriate use of radiation as a treatment modality. This can only be ameliorated by accurate information about the causes, frequency, severity, and prevention or treatment of these radiation-associated conditions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for Managing Non-cardiac Chest Pain
CBT for Managing Non-cardiac Chest Pain is an evidence-based guide and workbook for clinicians working with people with non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP). NCCP affects around 25–30% of people in the UK, the US and Europe, and it is associated with high levels of ealth-care use and compromised quality of life. This is the fi rst book to describe a treatment programme to fi ll the gap in care for patients. The authors have developed and researched a novel approach that demonstrates how physiological, cognitive, behavioural and social factors all contribute to the negative experience of chest pain. With the help of exercises and handouts for the patient, the book aims to provide the necessary information and clinical skills and approaches for clinicians to use in health-care settings.

Neuropsychological Evaluation of Somatoform and Other Functional Somatic Conditions

Neuropsychological Evaluation of Somatoform and Other Functional Somatic Conditions
I remember as a graduate psychology student, and then as a neuropsychology postdoctoral fellow, being puzzled by somatoform presentations, particularly those involving conversion disorder. I recall wondering as I witnessed a psychogenic non-epileptic seizure patient displaying a “seizure, ” “What is this person thinking? What is going through his mind?” I viewed myself as a logical person who behaved in what I thought were rational ways, and the idea that a person could create physical symptoms that were not “real” at a less than conscious level seemed mysterious, fantastical, and contrary to our prized human intellect. Over the intervening three decades as a psychologist and neuropsychologist, my understanding of somatoform disorders felt incomplete and unsatisfactory. In working on this book, I finally had the opportunity to immerse myself in the rich literature on the genesis of “nonconscious” behaviors and how these might apply to symptom creation.

Field Guide To The Arrhythmias
If the innocent or uninitiated were to wander through the cardiac unit, telemetry unit, or in fact through any unit where ECG monitoring is in use (we will stick with the English ElectroCardioGram spelling), he or she would likely encounter rhythms which were un familiar. It is even possible such rhythms might be rudely thrust into one’s face with a request to evaluate them or even take drastic action: “Should I shock him?” or “Do you think this is Mobitz I second degree exit block?” In fact, traveling through a unit in such fashion may be likened to a wanderer strolling through a forest, unsure of the names of the trees or wildflowers, or the significance of certain tracks.
